Soldier returns home from hospital to find his childhood hometown is missing…

… he suspects a government conspiracy, but in the end it is revealed that his trauma has caused him to mis-remember key parts of his childhood, and that the two-word name of his hometown is ACTUALLY the names of the two intersecting streets, the location of the apartment building in a city where he grew up.

I saw this film when I was a kid, probably somewhere from the mid-seventies to the early eighties. The lead was a dark haired man, who’s face I can see clearly, but cannot put a name to.
