Sometime in the 60s I watched an old Western. It was told in flashback. A Seminole Indian is about to be lynched by a Southern mob, but a Confederate veteran intervenes and explained the man’s service to the South in the Civil War. The rest of the film was devoted to this and just before returning to the present, we are read a letter from Jefferson Davis promising the Indians a State of their own instead of a reservation.
Ring any bells?
