What is the name of this 60’s thriller movie?

50’s/60’s classic thriller movie. Man runs out of gas and walks for help to the nearest house for help. Finds a large mansion, but no one answers the door, so he finds his way in and overlooks a large gallery with a secret society having a meeting late at night. He decides to leave and come back another time. He returns next day with the police to be told by the caretaker that no one has been there for a very long time and he must be mistaken. The plot turns European and he finds himself in a foreign country. I saw this in the early 70’s, I’m fairly sure it was black and white, but I cant be sure whether it was British or American.
