Trying to remember an old film

Trying to remember a film that I believe had a man trapped on an island, he has a “pet” monkey. Later in the film pirates arrive and hang his friend and partly skin him with a hook on a pole and (graphically)kill his monkey. I think it is likely a pre 90s movie
