Orphaned boy hides death of guardian and keeps claiming pension

I believe either French or French Canadian, released med to late eighties or early nineties.
Early-teen boy lives with mother/grandmother? who the boy cashes government benefit cheque and buys groceries for housebound? guardian. She dies, but instead of informing authorities, the boy continues the same routine, and attends school as usual, as he doesn’t want to go to orphanage? School/Authorities eventually become suspicious.
