Italian director, film about bisexual love triangle

0

I was reading a newspaper article (I think it was Richmond Times in VA) from I think around 2010-2012 about I think it was an Italian director. I was enjoying the article, but the only thing I can remember is that one of his films was about a bisexual love triangle that might have been set in Australia. I found an Australian set movie that I thought was it, but thinking back maybe I only remember the Australia setting because I found that movie that seemed to be it, maybe the movie from the article wasn’t actually set in Australia.

You may have read an article about acclaimed Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. His films are celebrated for a lush visual style and precise use of color. They also broke a lot of boundaries, most notably Last Tango in Paris with Marlon Brando. Bertolucci won many international awards over a long career, including two Oscars. Some of his most celebrated films were 1900 and The Conformist.

One of his final films, The Dreamers, is indeed about a love triangle. Not set in Australia, however, but in Paris during the May student riots of 1968. It is about a naive young American cinephile studying in Paris, who strikes up a friendship with more worldly French twins (a brother and sister) who share his love for film. Their parents are away on an extended vacation and the American accepts an invitation to stay with them at their luxurious home in Paris. The American soon discovers that the brother and sister have little in the way of sexual barriers when he sees them sleeping together in the nude. They draw the American student into a love triangle, stripping him of his inhibitions and innocence.
