What’s this movie called?

It’s been so many years but all I can remember is…
There’s a young black boy/man who auditions for some sort of acting job. He’s able to memorize script and act out the scenes perfectly. He eventually gets hired and slowly the fame and spotlight goes to his head to where it affects people working with him. I believe he slips into depression and possibly loses the job, resulting in him taking his life.

I remember watching it in my teen years, I want to say back in the 90s. Can’t remember much more but loved it and would love to see it again. Very vague but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
