When I was a child (50s&60s), I watched a black and white movie in which there was a scene of ‘the gods’ playing a game of chess. I’m remembering them as ‘gods’ (small ‘g’), but it might be they were something else. They wore Greek clothing, and the scene was in front of a few, free-standing tall white columns – this is the image my memory presents. Also, per memory, the chess board seemed huge. I’d love to be reminded of the name of the movie.
Probably Jason and the Argonauts, a 1963 film that featured outstanding stop-motion special effects by the great Ray Harryhausen. The film isn’t in black and white, but it does feature a memorable scene of Hera and Zeus on Mount Olympus playing chess on a large board. They are actually manipulating events in the life of Jason and his crew.
My goodness, I do believe that’s it!
It was probably in black and white, for me, because the family most likely didn’t have a color TV, yet… whenever yet was… I know we didn’t have one long after other families did.
I’m tempted to buy a copy of the movie, just to watch it again.
Thank you so much.
