What was the name of that movie?

I’m trying to find a movie from the 90s. It was about a boy and a girl who were in a plane crash and trying to make their way thru the wilderness. The pilot (I think he was Indian) was injured during the crash. He broke his leg. He traveled with the boy and girl for a short while before he died. I remember one scene where he taught the girl how to find her way using two sticks that were crossed over one another. She needed to slowly spin around in a circle until the sticks would move into the direction they needed to go.

Another scene I remember clearly was that the girl got bit by a snake and the boy tried to suck the venom out. Can’t remember if she lived.
