This sounds a lot like a very fine 1988 film by New Zealand film-maker Vincent Ward, The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey.

That film begins in 14th century England. The Black Death is ravaging Europe. A young boy, who lives in a small village that has not yet been touched by bubonic plague, has visions of a place of safety on the other side of the world. Some villagers have faith in his visions and dig a tunnel in a great pit hoping to find this place of safety. When they break through the final barrier in the tunnel, they not only find themselves on the other side of the world, but five centuries into the future, in contemporary New Zealand.
